Q: I wanted to ask you, Lindsey, what about your role continues to challenge you?

Lindsey: I think the need for evolution of this character really challenges me as it challenges all of us in this new season. I think we work on a show that, well, really any show can get stagnant if it stays one note, and so I think what we achieved in the second season was evolving everybody and keeping everybody interesting and relatable so that people want to watch them, which was a challenge. I really attempted to make Kat softer and to allow more in, and so that was challenging, but really fun. My friend Ethan Peck made that a lot easier, so it was fun.

Ethan: Well, thanks.

Q: Ethan, a lot of social networking sites have different areas dedicated to the show and to individual characters. Why do you think social networking has become so important to the promotion of the show?

Ethan: Social networking has become really important for many types of media at this point in time, but I think it’s special for this show because Web sites like Twitter and Facebook are becoming open to people of all ages, and our show really is geared to a younger demographic, in my opinion, and these are the kids that are making Twitter successful and making Facebook huge and who blew up MySpace, so it’s no question that they’re good for shows like us geared toward the younger audience.

Q: The first question I have for you is that it seems like the characters of Kat and Patrick are tied up in this relationship tease, and you see that on a lot of different shows where the couple that really needs to be together or that is going to be together eventually, they just never quite get there. I was wondering why do you guys think it is that writers maybe are so hesitant to make that move, and would you like to see your characters actually have a real relationship where it’s not questionable whether or not they’re really together?

Lindsey: I think for the first part of that question it’s that because, obviously, you need to maintain a tension between your characters. That’s sort of how it is in real life, achieving that perfect balance means you’ve reached this really Zen place of being together, and that’s rarely the case. There’s always that struggle back and forth, and it’s just a little more exaggerated and dramatic in the show I think. In terms of an actual relationship, I think it would be really interesting, but I also think that they’re too much; I just don’t know if that banter could ever cease. Either way, I think that they’re a big presence in each other’s lives and they always will be.

Ethan: I agree.

Q: A follow-up question, how do you guys think this show fits in with ABC Family’s, I guess, kind of the theme of family television and family networking? How do you see the show fitting I guess into at least that perception of the network?

Ethan: Well, I think that the show is told from the perspective of these two girls who have their own unique type of family. Their mother has passed away, but we see this show from the perspective of a tight, loving family with a strict parent, and you see the way other characters contrast to the daughters that come from this good family, characters like Patrick, whom I play, who may not have the loving family that Kat does. You see that, and it teaches a lesson both to parents and to kids that a good, supporting family is a loving one, and I think it sets a good example for everybody out there. I actually don’t really have TV yet still, and I haven’t seen too much of the other shows, but I do know that they’re all about friends and family supporting one another to achieve bigger dreams and bigger goals and aspirations.

Q: In the upcoming episode, Kat and Patrick get caught skipping school and are suspended. I was just wondering how does each of your characters deal with the suspension?

Ethan: I’ll go first because I’ll be short. Patrick just doesn’t really care, so it’s like a day off for him. Do they both get suspended, Lindsey? Yes, of course they do.

Lindsey: Yes, sorry, they both do.

Ethan: It’s just like a vacation for him, and I guess I’ll let Lindsey speak for herself.

Lindsey: Yes, Kat actually, believe it or not, gets a little frazzled, and she realizes she’s going to miss a really big test, and this forces her to do some dramatic things which she needs Patrick’s help for. She reacts in her normal crazy, over-reactive way.

Q: Lindsey, I wanted to know, how do you see the relationship between Kat and Bianca evolving over the season?

Lindsey: Actually, this season feels so much more sisterly between Kat and Bianca. I don’t know why. There’s either a deepening of our understanding of each other’s characters or just us being closer having known each other for this much longer. Yes, they really just take on this deeper sisterly vibe, and it gets more away from the banter and more into the fact that these are two sisters who can see what’s going on with the other and try to lend advice no matter how removed they feel. I really like that. I really enjoyed that. Meaghan [Martin] and I really get a chance to take that to another level, so it was great.

Q: The last time I talked to Lindsey we addressed this topic, but Ethan, it’s your turn. Apparently, you have fans that think you should’ve been Edward in Twilight. What do you have to say about that?

Ethan: I don’t have too much to say about that. I have actually never seen it, and so I can’t tell you whether or not I would’ve done a better job than who did it, and it sounds like he did a pretty good job, Robert Pattinson, so I have no problem having missed out on that.

Q: They should just watch you on 10 Things and be happy.

Ethan: Yes, exactly, and watch him and be happy.

Q: Sounds fair. Ruby and the Rockets got canceled, and that came out the same time 10 Things came out. Were you guys ever nervous that you weren’t going to get renewed?

Ethan: Yes.

Lindsey: Yes, absolutely. The last scene that we shot of the first ten episodes, Meaghan and I had the last scene together, and I just kind of looked over at her when it was done, and I started crying and sort of lost it only because if that’s the end of that experience for you, that’s really emotional. Yes, it only became a hiatus like months into it.

Ethan: Yes.

Q: Were either of you intimidated to make the show considering what a classic the original movie has become?

Lindsey: No, I was not intimidated really only because it’s a whole new thing. It’s a similar springboard with characters that you know, but different people bringing them to life, so essentially, it’s really its own thing, and I think we have accomplished making this show something on its own beyond the movie now. No, we were never really trying to replicate anything. We’ve talked about this a lot, right, Ethan?

Ethan: Yes, I wasn’t nervous at all to begin the show because it had been a movie, but I was very nervous because I knew that Gil Young was coming back who directed the film, and Larry Miller was going to be there, so there was sort of a reimagining happening of some sort in some ways, but in no way were any of us trying to, yes, I guess replicate what had been done. If anything, I was nervous just because I knew that I wanted it to be good, and could I make it good and what could I contribute.

Q: You guys have definitely done a great job of making it its own thing and completely separate from the movie now.

Ethan: Thanks.

Q: Do you guys have a favorite scene that you enjoyed filming?

Lindsey: From this season it would be the dinner table scene in episode three. Patrick comes, or it was episode two. Yes, episode two because, episode three, yes.. Episode two is he comes over for dinner at the Stratford house, and it’s very hilarious. I kind of got a chance to just observe them.

Ethan: That was a good scene. That was a fun scene. That felt like the beginning of—of like a new part of our relationship on the show.

Lindsey: Absolutely, totally.

Q: You two have such a great chemistry on screen. Is that something you found right off the bat, or was it something that just progressed over the first ten episodes?

Ethan: What do you think, Lindsey?

Lindsey: I definitely think that was a progression. I don’t know if any of you can tell, but Ethan is a man of few words, and when I first met him, he was true to his persona. He was just silent and observant with his backpack and his hi-tops, and so it was interesting getting to know him. I think the first time we actually had a chance to sit down and talk was episode seven of the first season when we were doing that rooftop scene. Remember when we were outside until midnight?

Ethan: Yes.

Lindsey: That’s really the first time our characters actually talked on the show, so I guess that was okay, but it’s really kind of mirrored the communication up until that point.

Q: For you, Ethan, Patrick is probably the most mysterious character on the show and we don’t know a lot about him. In these next ten episodes, are we going to get more of a look inside him and what his back story is?

Ethan: A little bit. You’ll start to see some clues as to what his life is like, but it’s really being kept in the dark.

Q: I kind of have a follow-up question also regarding the movie, but I was just wondering, do you guys ever get tired of that constant comparison, I think, in every interview, to Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger and to the original film, or is that just kind of part of, I guess, the landscape in doing a re-imaging of a popular movie like that?

Lindsey: Yes, absolutely. People’s only version of what you’re putting out is the original really, and you tell them that you’re going to be redoing it. Naturally, they’re going to think to attach it to what they’re familiar with, with that concept. It’s that original piece of work, and I think that once you work to make it something on its own, something that no longer needs to be compared, it can stand on its own. I think that that’s when that stops, and I think that’s just kind of what you work towards. I think as a couple of you have said that we’ve done that. We’ve made it its own thing, and so it feels like we earned that. We earned the right to say that.

Ethan: Yes, and I don’t think it gets tiring to hear the question over and over because, as Lindsey said, it’s from a beloved movie, this show, and people are going to be suspicious and curious and want to know why they’re remaking something that was so successful because we’re not remaking it. It’s the same franchise, the same name, and that question is going to be asked and asked, and our answer will be the show. You’ll see this upcoming ten where we’ve taken it.

Q: As my follow-up I was wondering if you could both talk a little bit about how you got into acting. Ethan, I was wondering if your family background opened doors for you, or is it just kind of something that’s there?

Ethan: It hasn’t opened doors for me that I know of. I started acting because my mom offered to take me on an audition when I was younger, and I loved doing lots of new things and new fun activities, and I was about nine years old, so I said yes, and it was fun, and I really enjoyed it. I’ve just continued to do it ever since.

Q: Great. Now, Lindsey, can you talk about your background, how you got into this because I know it’s kind of a really interesting story.

Lindsey: Yes, kind of. I guess it’s how you tell it. Seriously, from a really young age, I’ve really liked being the center of attention and entertaining people, and somehow I got involved with local interests and whatnot in Nebraska where I’m from and went to a couple spots before ending up in L.A. and sort of really trying it out here. Luckily, I got lucky and was able to stay out here, and it’s been really good with fortunate luck ever since.

Q: Lindsey mentioned a hiatus. I just wanted to know, how did the six-month break affect you guys? Was it easy just to get back into the show?

Lindsey: Was it really a six-month break? July, August, September, October, November, December, I guess like five months, but yes and no. I guess I feel so much like this character that I don’t feel like she really ever leaves me, and that’s just a testament to what was written for me last season. It just feels so easy to kind of slide back into it.

Ethan: I felt really comfortable and safe jumping right back into Patrick in the second ten [episodes] because the hiatus was difficult for me. It’s a long time to figure out what to do with yourself and to begin to understand what being an actor is and sitting around and waiting, but everybody on the show is so wonderful and generous and collaborative. It’s really easy to jump back in and start things off where we left them if not a little ahead of where we left them.

Q: Ethan, what is one thing about the new season that you’re most excited about?

Ethan: I don’t know, lots of things. There’s a fight scene. That’s pretty exciting that I won’t tell you too much about.

Lindsey: Yes, Ethan roughs a guy up.

Ethan: But we’ll let that scene surprise you when it comes along.

Q: Lindsey, a lot of people know you as Moze from Ned’s Declassified. Would you say you’re more like Moze or more like Kat?

Lindsey: Well, I think Kat is just like a really grown-up version of Moze. Really, it’s like the next, I really feel like it’s Ned’s Declassified in high school, obviously, not as exaggerated, but I feel like when I was that age I could really relate to who I was playing then, and as I’ve grown up this is just a natural progression of that. I’m two different people when I’m playing them. I guess at this point in my life this feels the most right and who I am.

Q: My question is I was wondering what’s to say for whatever reason you guys were put totally in charge of the show and where it’s going to go. What element or thing would you add either to the show or to your characters that’s not there?

Lindsey: I think we have different answers here, which is awesome. I guess in this ten this is kind of addressed, but I guess I would just have my character interact with more people. Bianca has kind of this whole world around her, and Kat is working to build that, but she doesn’t really have many friends or people, so it would be cool to have different outlets or different hobbies that she had other than just crusading all the time.

Ethan: Yes, that’s good, Lindsey. Maybe I would have Patrick go on a motorcycle road trip or something and bring some fun.

Lindsey: I’d totally be jazzed if you piggyback on that motorcycle road trip.

Ethan: Yes, maybe Cameron could get one, and it would be great.

Lindsey: Really to have the whole show turn into a biker gang of sorts. That just has different routes of publicity written all over it.

Ethan: Yes, Lindsey, that’s good. I like that.

Lindsey: That’d be great. We could all get bikes.

Q: Ethan, is there chance ever that we’re going to see some of your musical talents? I was thinking it would be really awesome to see Patrick playing the cello kind of in secret.

Ethan: Yes, I think that they threw that idea around a little bit, but I don’t think they want people to like Patrick that much.

Q: In the first ten episodes each of your characters kind of only interacted with a few of the other characters. From what I’ve seen in the new episodes, there’s a lot more interaction with the other main characters. What was that like getting to work with everybody else?

Lindsey: It is so wonderful. I feel like Meaghan and I work two different shifts on the show. I always come in for the morning, and Meaghan is always there late at night, and so really it’s this whole other storyline show, everything that you never get to see that you just have no idea about, and when you finally get to pull some of those in your direction and interact with them, it’s just fresh and new and it brings something new out of you. It brings something new out of them. It just feels really fresh, so I really enjoyed. I especially enjoyed working with Nicholas Braun. I got to work with him quite a bit this season, so that was so awesome.

Ethan: Yes, I didn’t really get to work with too many other characters, but there were scenes that there were more characters in that I was included in, and it’s so exciting because I love everybody so much in this show and get along with all of them so well, and we’re all itching to have more scenes with each other, as Lindsey said, like with Nicholas, with Chris, or with Meaghan, and I’m hoping to see a lot more of that in hopes that we have more seasons to do.

Q: You all seem pretty close. Can you give maybe a random fact about a few of your co-stars or each other?

Lindsey: Ethan listens to classical music in his trailer all day, every day.

Ethan: No, I don’t.

Lindsey: Yes, you do.

Ethan: Chris Zylka speaks Russian.

Lindsey: Meaghan bakes banana bread for people, for the crew, for her cast. She is a wonderful baker, and Nick is a great freestyle rapper.

ethan: Yes, he is.

Lindsey: Nick is amazing at throwing down a little verse.

Q: Last question, if you had to sum up these ten episodes and tell people why they should watch, what would you say to them?

Lindsey: I think you should watch because you’re going to be more entertained by this than anything else that’s on Mondays… at 8:00pm… on ABC Family.

Ethan: Nice.

Q: Kat’s a real, like we mentioned, is a crusader, so what are you passionate about besides acting of course?

Lindsey: In the past year I’ve gotten really passionate about health and nutrition, actually. I recently became a pescatarian, which is somebody who only eats fish, and I’m kind of a crusader of my own in my own life, but I kind of watched Food Inc. and tried to push that on everybody that I knew. That’s become a big interest of mine, and recycling has always been something that I, I don’t know, I can’t stop it. My mom literally put it into me as a small child. She recycled everything, so I kind of have the neuroses, and I couldn’t stop even if I wanted to.

Ethan: Yes, she has recycling parties.

Lindsey: No, I don’t make everybody else do it, but it’s always around my apartment.

Q: That’s fantastic. My readers had a couple questions for you, too. The first was if we were to listen to your iPods or MP3s, what would we hear, either one of you?

Lindsey: Ethan, do you want to jump in here any time, man?

Ethan: You would hear a lot of different music.

Q: Other than classical?

Ethan: I listen to lots of stuff. I do like classical—what?

Lindsey: I said you have amazing taste in music.

Ethan: Thanks, Lindsey. I love Ravel, I guess to begin with the classical. I like a lot of weirder ambielectronic music like Tim Hecker and probably a lot of stuff that maybe you wouldn’t have heard of. What about you, Lindsey?

Lindsey: Are you saying, “Lindsey, you’re more mainstream. You would like something relatable to the kids.” [Laughs] I’m much more basic. I’m a folksy person at heart really. I really like Ray Lamontagne and Band of Horses, a little Death Cab, all of the above. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are amazing.

Q: The other thing I’d like to know is if you could guest star on any TV show besides your own, what would it be?

Lindsey: I would guest star on Nurse Jackie. I absolutely love that show, and Edie Falco is incredible, so absolutely. Ethan, what about you?

Ethan: Well, if I watched TV, maybe 30 Rock.

Lindsey: Ethan, you’ve been asked this TV question so many times, you’ve got to just sit down and power through one and then that’s your go-to.

Q: Francia, I wanted to know now that Alex and James are partners, what happened to Zach from Chasing the Dream?

Francia: Zach had an accident after the movie, and he was tired of figure skating so he was ready to retire. Alex wasn’t. She had just started skating. She had won the gold and still had that drive in her to continue figure skating. That got in the way of their relationship, so they just decided to part ways and he went on to live his life and she went on to try and figure skate. But it didn’t really work out because she didn’t have a partner, so she just started teaching, and then that’s when James comes in.

Q: Brendan, since Francia has already done one of these movies before, what was it like for you to be strapping on the skates?

Brendan: Part of it just came naturally. I played hockey my whole life, so obviously the ice skating, just the regular skating backward and side-to-side is pretty much the same. I was comfortable on skates, but then there’s a difference between skating and figure skating. When you’re asked to exhibit a little bit of grace out there, then that’s when all hell broke loose.

Q: Francia, how were you chosen for the Cutting Edge III?

Francia: I auditioned for the role shortly after I came back from a movie I did in Spain. When I went in, they had asked me if I figure skate. I said, “Coincidentally I do,” so I think that played a big part in getting the role, but I also had a long audition process that lasted a couple weeks.

Q: What was the inspiration to go ahead and make a sequel to it?

Francia: I really enjoyed doing the third film. I wanted to go back to Montreal and shoot again. I wanted to figure skate again. I was really intrigued by skating the first time I did it for the movie. Then, they told me a possible storyline, but I didn’t get a script, but I was really inspired by the third one and I said, why not. The third one was such a hit, let’s just do it again.

Q: I have a really quick question for you. The readers wanted to know what your other passions are besides acting and skating.

Francia: Is this for both of us?

Q: Yes.

Francia: Brendan, go first.

Brendan: I guess number one right now would be golfing. That would be my number one hobby. I try to do that as much as possible. That would be about it. The days are filled up, I guess, taking care of my daughter and just doing the regular stuff that everyone else does. When I’m not working, it would be golf for sure.

Francia: Mine is dancing. I’ve been a dancer for about 17 years and on my off time, that’s pretty much all I do is take classes and dance.

Q: What did you two like most about working with each other?

Francia: Brendan, you go first.

Brendan: You just want to copy my answer! I enjoy working with new people. I always enjoy finding out how new people work and what they do. We both have personalities where we said what we wanted to say. You talk about the scene and you say, “I’m trying to do this.” It was easy to communicate with her. You had to learn, obviously she’s more of a dancer than I did, so you get tips from her in terms of when we’re skating and all the choreography. It was a good relationship. She had already done the third film, so she knew her character and I was coming in new. And if we had differences, then obviously we worked those out with the director in terms of figuring out if I do this, and then you can do this, but that doesn’t work for me. It was an easy process that way, I think. She was relatively easy and enjoyable to work with, so that’s always what it comes down to: having fun and making sure you get the work done, but having fun while you’re doing it.

Francia: For me, I enjoyed that he was a hard worker. He was really into just making a good movie and working hard at making it as good as possible, I guess you can say. He worked really hard at the figure skating, even though he wasn’t, like he said, wasn’t a dancer, he was a hockey player and let me critique him a bit and just let me teach him how to be graceful. But, mostly I enjoyed watching him do ballet. That was the highlight of my experience with him, ballet lessons. And, like I said, other than that, he was just a hard worker and it’s important for me to find that in a costar.

Q: Mainly for Brendan, I have a question about having done this movie, did this pique your interest at all in watching the figure skating in the Olympics this past time? Were you more interested in watching them?

Brendan: I would probably yes, a little bit more. The Olympics were in my home town, Vancouver, so they obviously had that going for it in terms of me watching. Obviously, hockey was the big match we were looking for – hockey and curling. But I looked at figure skating with a whole new appreciation. We know how exceptional triple axels and quadruples are, and stringing those moves together, but it was actually just the little technical things like the foot work and the fingers, looking at the fingers of the people and how they’re holding their hands. You go out there and skate, but the amount of trouble I had with just simply getting my hands and fingers in the correct position without looking too lazy or too stiff was amazingly challenging. So, yes, looking at all these skaters—it was really the little stuff that stood out for me because like I said before, all the jumps, they’re clearly amazing and really hard to do. But it was just that little technical stuff that I think most people who have never done it might think he’s putting his skates, he’s crossing them over and chip chop along the ice or whatever else. But that was the stuff that took a surprising amount of work, so I definitely did appreciate the figure skating much more this time, having tried and failed at it miserably.

Q: First of all, thanks so much for taking our questions. What did you all have to do to train for this movie to prepare for the ice skating?

Francia: We trained about three or four times a week for figure skating and partner skating—we had to do lifts any time we could. Like I said before, my favorite part were the ballet lessons where Brendan failed miserably.

Brendan: Skating, we would do anywhere between two and four times a week. We would throw in a lift session in there once or twice if we could, just in terms of doing lifts on dry land and getting used to those. And because Francia has taken dance before, we did ballet together as well. I also went a few times on my own just because I was a little behind in the flexibility department—

Francia: I got in trouble by the teacher, too.

Brendan: The ballet was actually possibly my favorite. We just had a blast in there.

Francia: Yes, because we kept getting in trouble, both of us. Even through I’m a dancer and I knew what I was doing, I still got in trouble and got yelled at.

Brendan: We had this hard core teacher who I believe was Eastern European. There were no soft spoken kind words in that room. She was there to mold you and to break you, which was was great. We all loved each other, and it was a lot of fun. That was probably a whole movie unto itself, I think.

Q: Do you all have a favorite scene from the movie?

Brendan: Favorite scene.

Francia: Would it be the poker? No.

Brendan: That’s more of a montage than a scene, but it was an enjoyable—

Francia: We had a scene afterwards when my mom walked in and we were undressed—

Brendan: Yes, that was fun to do.

Francia: You know what, it was fun for me to see you trying to put your clothes and you kept tripping. I think that was fun for me.

Brendan: Yes, that was enjoyable. I think some of the ones that are more enjoyable to do aren’t necessarily the most enjoyable to watch. But, I think that would have been one. For me the drunk scene is always kind of fun – in this case, when I show up at her door. That’s always interesting to see what you can and can’t get away with as an actor. But I think the movie as a whole, having seen it, was pleasantly surprising. I quite enjoyed it. I’m proud of it. But, probably the poker scene stands out the most, I suppose.

Francia: Yes, it was fun.

Q: I wanted to ask you both this trend with what ABC Family is doing taking a popular film franchise and turning it into a TV movies that keep going, what do you think about that? It’s different than the direct to DVD market that I guess other movies have gone through. Do you think that gives you just as actors, is that more choices or more potential roles doing something like that?

Brendan: I think so. There’s a place for it. You’re always looking for something original that hasn’t been done before. We have those, but just like there’s a gazillion different types of genres from horror to comedy to whatever else. I think there’s also, there’s different ways to get material out there and to take a successful franchise. I think that’s one way of doing it. I don’t think there’s a right or a wrong. Some people like it, some people don’t. And sometimes you don’t want to remake or add upon a classic and I understand that as well. But I think there’s a time and a place for it and when it’s done right, it gives people jobs and an opportunity to whether it’s provide for their family or to get out there or to launch a career or to kick start one or to help a network get some original programming, I think it has a bunch of positives there.

It’s not something I’d like to see done with every successful film. Like I said, some need to be just left alone and as they are. But, yes, there’s absolutely a time and a place for it. I appreciate that I got this opportunity, so obviously nothing but positive stuff came at it from my end. But I could see the time when it’s like no, no, let’s not do this. I think it’s a smart thing. It obviously has been very successful for them, so that would be my particular take on it.

Francia: Like Brendan said, not every movie should be turned into a sequel and then some should just be left alone. But me myself, I was a big fan of the first Cutting Edge movie, so getting the opportunity to be a part of it and participate in it was almost like a dream come true, because I also did a sequel to Bring it On. I remember being ….if only I was old enough to do it and then I was able to, so making it is a girl’s dream come true. I guess I appreciate that ABC Family did do this. I think it’s smart for ABC Family to bring these TV movies to life. It’s good for the movie because there are fans for ABC Family. I think they’re very smart with that they’re doing and they’re picking the right movies to continue making, like the Cutting Edge. So I don’t think there’s a right or wrong to it, but this is definitely not one of those movies that they should have stopped at. It could have almost continued from the previous ones.

Q: Francia, where does this fit in with your production schedule for Secret Life? Did you do this on a hiatus?

Francia: Yes, I did it in a hiatus. I had, what was it, a three or four week hiatus in August of 2009. As soon as I got on hiatus, they flew me out to Montreal to start filming. But as I was filming Secret Life, I was training on the days off. So I was juggling both for that.

Q: Brendan, I can’t get you on the phone without somehow bringing Roswell up into this because of the background there. Is it coming up on ten years now that that show has been off the air. And then the fan boards, your message boards, all those places are still just really incredibly active. What do you think ten years later? Does that surprise you? Did you ever think it was going to be that way ten years form now back when you were doing that?

Brendan: It’s gone by so fast. Obviously, a lot has happened since then. I always knew going into it, that if you take a look at something like Star Trek or Star Wars, and I’m not comparing Roswell to those kind of huge iconic things, but any sci-fi property, it tends to grow a lot of legs if it’s done well. So in that respect, there are fans that are loyal and in the beginning, they didn’t always get projects or films or shows that were of the highest quality. So when people started putting money and time and technology into these types of programs, and making them as on the same kind of level of quality as other filmmaking, you can see that there was something there to hold onto.

So it’s waned a little bit in popularity having not been on television for ten years, but the fans are behind it. It doesn’t surprise me because that loyalty factor that’s always there with the sci-fi fans, it’s unlike anything else. It’s kind of nice to see that it’s brought some people together on those boards and people have made friends as a result of it. But, it was a great experience and I’m glad that people enjoyed it.

Q: Just one more follow-up for you, Brendan, is there any word on Samurai Girl? Are they going to do anymore in that series or do you know yet?

Brendan: As far as I know, that’s done. We got six episodes and we had left it open for a possible television series or some sort of a follow-up. But, that is at its end as of right now.

Q: Brendan, so you went from hockey in your personal life to figure skating with this movie. What was the level of difficulty for you?

Brendan: Pretty much as high as it gets, I suppose. Hockey is about getting low, lowering your center of gravity and getting wide so you can’t be knocked down or knocked off the puck. You don’t have to be graceful to be effective. Figure skating is just exactly the complete opposite. It’s get lean, get tall – and it’s not what I’m built to do. I don’t think I’ve done anything beautifully or gracefully in my entire life. That’s just not one of the skills or talents I was born with. Everything I do, it gets done, but not necessarily with an element of grace.

So the level of difficulty was pretty high and having absolutely no rhythm as well, as Francia can attest to, upped the stakes there for me. You do what you can. You work hard and you pointers and you get tips and you train and you do what you can. Then, the rest, you obviously leave up to editing and music and stunt doubles. But, you just have fun with it and you do the best you can with what you got and the time you have and then you hope the people in the editing room really like you and are interested in making you look good, which I think they actually did. I think I actually look like I know what I’m doing out there.

Q: Francia, you mentioned you ice skated before. What’s the toughest trick or jump that you can still do on ice?

Francia: I was 11 years old and at that time, and I was fearless. They told me to do a jump and I was thinking, “Okay, I’m going to do the highest jump I can do. I’m going to try to do it three hundred million times.” I was so fearless and the older I got, I don’t know what happened, the more fear I grew, I guess. So, when it came back to going on the ice, I was able to do the mechanics, but I did not even want to attempt to try to do the actual things. I was pretty much at the beginner level, still at the kiddie level, but I can do mechanics of some other stuff like, what was it Brendan, toe loops and—

Brendan: Toe loops and axles. I still don’t know the difference between some of them. I know what a toe loop is, but I still don’t know the different between an axel and sow cow.

Francia: Well, axel, I think I know the mechanics, but I can’t really do it. It’s more me standing up and doing it in place, rather than skating because then I got scared.

Brendan: The waltz jump, that’s the only one that I can distinguish for the most part—the toe loop and the waltz jump—

Francia: Believe it or not, Brendan was better at doing a toe loop than I was.

Brendan: Yes, I can do a toe loop—it doesn’t look good, but it’s a toe loop.

Francia: I fell on the toe loop.

Q: Francia, since you play the bad girl on Secret Life, what was it like having your costar be labeled the bad boy?

Francia: It was nice for a change. It was because I got to be the good girl, but I missed it a bit. But, I got to have my little attitude, too, so it wasn’t that different. It was nice to have someone actually fight back with me and argue with me like Brendan’s character did. But, they didn’t let my tough side down too much in this character, so I was able to fight back. I guess considering the fact that he’s a bad boy and I am good girl, I’d be the favorite, but I don’t know. It was just fun and he did a good job at it.

Q: Brendan, I wanted to know what would attract a non-figure skating fan to this film?

Brendan: You obviously sell it on figure skating. It’s in the franchise of the Cutting Edge and that’s obviously where you’re going to end up is that some sort of championship and that’s what we’re geared towards. But ultimately this one—its legs are truly the relationship between James and Alex’s character. The figure skating almost serves as a backdrop to these two coming together, learning about each other, coming from different backgrounds and just figuring that out. It’s more about the relationship between the two and there are some great moments and there are some funny moments and there are some down and sad moments.

I think that’s what I enjoyed the most. The figure skating element is definitely there, but I think you’ll get a lot more out of it. It’s more about the banter between us two and there’s some pretty good banter in there. I think it would be if you enjoy that male, female, those differences and then obviously the differences you find in a partnership or a team sport, if you can in any way relate to those things, I think this is something you would enjoy. There’s definitely some funny moments in terms of miscommunication. I think there are some enjoyable moments and most of them take place outside of the actual figure skating.

Q: One more quick thing for you, you mentioned that it was tough getting into the figure skating. I just wanted to know about the scenes in the film where you’re learning to figure skate, how much of that is acting and how much of it is going to be real?

Francia: Our work is fairly real, but when it came to the stunts, the doubles took care of that.

Brendan: Yes, obviously, me and Francia are both okay, we can stand up on skates and skate backwards and do the turns. There’s a lot of general skating around the rink, getting prepared before doing jumps. That’s mostly us. We had done a lot of our training beforehand and got comfortable with that. Anything that has a significant element of skill involved is probably not us.

Q: Brendan, will we be seeing you on Bones again this season?

Brendan: I don’t know. I don’t know what’s happening with my character, actually. I haven’t been told. It’s kind of the same situation I had with CSI in the sense that if the storyline happens to come about, they just give me a call a month in advance and say are you available and this is what we have going on. It comes out of the blue, so I haven’t been made aware of any future storylines, but I hope that would be the case. Hart Hanson has always told me that any time he can and any time it makes sense, he would love to have me on it. But it’s a two-hander. It’s definitely Bones and Booth and that’s what the show really is about, so it has to make sense to interject other characters in there. Hopefully they come across a storyline that makes sense, because I’d love to go back.

Q: With the movie title being Fire & Ice, what are your two personalities like? Which one of you is fire and which one of you is ice?

Francia: I think we have both elements in our personalities. We have each those qualities in our characters, I believe, right, Brendan?

Brendan: Yes, but technically she’s the fire—

Francia: And he’s the ice.

Brendan: I’m the ice. “The Iceman” is my nickname in the film, so that’s what it comes down to. We definitely both have a certain amount of fire and passion for what we do and we both have the ability to turn up the ice and ignore or show some attitude towards the other person. Yes, definitely both elements there.

Q: What’s coming up next for both of you, in terms of projects we should look our for?

Francia: I’m currently filming Secret Life, so the new season will be coming back in July and Secret Life is going to be taking up the rest of my year, so more of that coming.

Brendan: For me nothing that I know of yet. Right now, I’m just pounding the pavement like the other gazillion actors out there.

In The Cutting Edge: Fire & Ice, Francia Raisa reprises her role as Alexandra “Alex” Delgado in film franchise, whose figure skating career came to an abrupt halt after her partner (on and off the ice) became injured. As their love affair cooled, a heart-broken Alex stopped competing and turned to teaching. Enter James Van Behr (Fehr), the smoldering bad boy of speed skating, who has had fiery Alex in his sights as a skating partner ever since he was banned from speed skating. There aren’t many girls who say no to James – Alex may well be the first. However, James pushes her buttons, challenging her like no one else and her fighting spirit returns. She agrees to be his partner and they begin a grueling practice regimen fueled (and occasionally derailed) by their own tempestuous relationship which heats up as they get closer to competition. But will their passion destroy Alex’s chance to bring home the gold again?

Paul Lee, president, ABC Family, today announced the pick-up of two one-hour dramas, “Huge” and “Pretty Little Liars.” Each series has been given a 10-episode order and is scheduled to premiere in 2010. Check out the open casting call here for Huge.

Here is Part 1 of the interview with Candace Cameron Bure:

Q: I know you’re a Christian. You have one a character who promotes Christian values positively, which is really rare in this day of media. How do you feel about having that role, and did you have to fight to get your character, Summer, to have those values on the show?

Candace: It was very interesting. I do hold a higher standard in some of the things I will do and won’t do. Some of that played into my character with Summer when we had created her, but originally I never asked if she was a Christian at all. That was something that after we talked, the producer decided it would be a great element to add to the show.

I was excited about that and it wasn’t something I was expecting. It’s been interesting for me because although I’m not Summer, we do hold a lot of the same views and opinions and values. It’s something I truly believe in, which is interesting as an actor, to really mean a lot of the lines that I’m saying and to believe in them.

I’m happy, being a Christian and portraying a Christian on television, and I want to make sure that it is a positive reflection of Christianity, unlike some of the views that we see in other characters on television shows that aren’t portraying Christianity so greatly. Anyway, it’s an exciting thing for me and I’m happy about it.

Q: What is it about this show that you feel continues to draw in viewers?

Candace: I think it’s a well-written show and the storylines themselves, because there’s so much drama; there’s a lot of conflict and having it based around gymnastics is something that hasn’t been on TV yet. I think is quite interesting for the viewers. I know we have so many fans who are gymnasts or have been in the gymnastic world and they’re so excited and pleased that there’s a show representing some of the things that they’ve gone through their whole lives.

And, also, being a teen drama and discussing the life of what teens go through and the hardships and drama itself – that’s something that hooks you and keeps you wanting to come back for more, to see what happens.

Q: What about the role continues to challenge you?

Candace: I’m having so much fun on the show and with this role. I mentioned before it is fun that I get to be a really positive person, and a go-to person for the girls in the gym if they want, especially for Lauren.

I’m a stable figure that hopefully represents love and that’s a great character to be playing. It’s fun for me to be in much more of a motherly role and an adult role, obviously having been on TV as a child for so many years. That, in itself, makes it nice to come back to TV as a completely different person in the sense that I’m an adult.

Q: What I wanted to know is have you noticed any changes in your day-to-day life since the show premiered? You have a whole new fan base and then, again, with the fans that have followed you all these years, has that impacted you in a way that you’ve been able to notice?

Candace: I’m still recognized from Full House; I think I will be my entire and that’s still where the majority of my fans are from. It is pretty fun for me when some of the younger kids come up to me say, “Aren’t you that lady from Make It or Break It?” That tickles me to death.

I love having new fans that know me from this show – that’s always a fun thing, but I’m forever grateful and love my Full House fans. I guess I haven’t seen a huge, dramatic change in fans from being on the show. I think I’ve got a great group of core fans that have just followed me for a long time; it’s quite flattering and I’m appreciative of them all.

Q: I just wanted to say it is great having you back on TV. I’m loving your character, Summer. I’d like to know what are the similarities and the differences between your personality and Summer’s.

Candace: We’re having fun because the show is so new and the characters are still developing so I’m learning a lot more about Summer as we’re diving into this back 10 [episodes] of the season. Something that I am not that Summer is is organized. We’ll see that Summer’s got her stuff together; she’s a bright woman, and she’s organized and she’s put together quite well. I guess being a mom of three I feel pretty disheveled most days. I can’t remember my car keys or what I just walked out the door to get. I will just go completely blank. I think that’s one big difference.

Another difference is I’m happily married with three children and Summer is still looking for love. She’s never been married and obviously she just broke up from a serious relationship at the end of Episode 10. She’s still looking for love. There’re a lot of differences between us. But, I think the common factor is the Christian faith that we share.

Q: I definitely agree. Also, your clothes on the show are just the cutest.

Candace: Thank you, I agree.

Q: Do you have input on that or do you just have an amazing wardrobe?

Candace: It’s both, but we have an amazing costume designer, Mary Kate – that’s just funny, her name [laughs]. Well, Mary Kate is great and we talk a lot about the wardrobe, but I think because I’m the only one in the show who’s technically not a gym mom or one of the gymnasts, so she just gets to have a lot of fun with me and put me in great clothes. A lot of them are the designers and the type of clothes that I wear in my own life. I come out on stage every day and all the girls on the show check me out to see what I’m wearing. They say, “You have the cutest clothes on the show.” That’s totally all our costume designer and I give her props, she’s awesome.

Q: You took a five or six-year break from acting back in 2001. Coming back into it, having a familiar name is it an easy transition back for you into the work or did it feel like you were starting from scratch all over again?

Candace: No, Hollywood embraced me and gave me a very warm welcome back. When I decided to come back towork, it didn’t take long at all. It was basically a little reintroduction of, “Hey, I’m back,” and everyone wanted to see what I looked like. From what most people say, I pretty much look the same as I did even ten years ago. I haven’t aged too much.

Aside from people just seeing what I look like, it was a very warm welcome. The calls started coming in right away. I didn’t have to fight hard at all, which is a beautiful place to be; I’m grateful for it.

Q: I wanted to ask you about what you said earlier in the interview. You said that you hold a high standard to choosing roles. Does it ever feel like you might be limited as an actress by doing this or is it not something you think about?

Candace: I definitely am limited, absolutely, but that’s okay. I’m the one that’s limiting myself and I’m limiting myself by choice. I want to do things that either will have a message at the end of the day, a good moral message, or things that will encourage people or families in a positive direction.

Not that everything is going to be perfect or everything’s happy; there are always struggles and conflict in television or movies and participating in those are great. I don’t have to do everything that holds the exact same viewpoint that I have, but at the end of the day, for me, I want it to have a positive reflection or redemption at the end of it, something learned from the situation. Yes, I’m limited, but that’s completely fine with me.
