Disney Stars
Sterling Knight Was a Theater Kid

Sterling Knight is getting more and more popular and landing some pretty decent roles. You may know him best from Sonny with a Chance and 17 Again, but get ready to see him with a lead role in the Disney Channel Original Movie “StarStruck”, which premieres on Disney Channel February 14, 2010 – Valentine’s Day.
PopWatch interviewed Knight awhile ago, right before 17 Again came out. Here are some parts of the interview I thought you might find interesting and helpful:
PW: As if that wasn’t enough, you also got to share almost all your scenes with Zac Efron. What was that like?
Sterling: It was weird honestly. I had auditioned for a lot of the stuff that Zac worked on, so there was a little animosity before we met.
PW: How so?
Sterling: Just in terms of being bitter and a struggling actor and seeing him book everything. Like, “why can’t that be me?” And then I got to talk to him and I came to find out that while he’s one of the most famous people, he’s incredibly down to earth. We surprisingly got a great friendship out of this.
PW: So no more animosity?
Sterling: No, no more. Zac’s done everything right — he never says the wrong thing, he’s nice and makes all the right moves. It’s nice to have someone of his caliber that I can ask for advice.
PW: The movie is all about going back to high school. Did you like high school?
Sterling: It was a good experience although I wasn’t necessarily good at it. There is this hierarchy in high school and I was real bad at it. I was just stubborn to a fault and couldn’t respect the cool kids just because they were the cool kids. So I wasn’t the most popular.
PW: I know that you’ve also been working on “Sonny With A Chance” with Demi Lovato. How’s that been?
Sterling: It’s been fun. This show is a totally different vibe and experience than “17 Again.” I’ve jumped into this multi-camera sitcom and it’s so exciting to be exposed to all these different facets of the industry and concepts. I’m trying to learn as much as possible.
PW: Did you know that acting was always your destiny?
Sterling: I was a theater kid growing up, so for me, the dream was Broadway and Tony Awards. I wanted to be in “Rent” and “Grease” and all these classic plays. But I also played all these different sports and was in choir, so I had lots of varying interested. I’ve tried to expose myself to as much as possible and let whatever happens, happen.
PW: So is Broadway the next step?
Sterling: I really like TV and would love to do do theater. Not to be pretentious, but doing Broadway would blow my mind. But I also like filming movies, and after seven months of the sitcom, I would love to do another film. For me, I want to do everything and if someone would give me the opportunity, I would love to try anything.
