Savannah Outen: From YouTube to Celebrity

I had the chance to interview singer Savannah Outen the other day and talk about her song “Little Wonders”, which she covers for Disneymania 7, which comes out tomorrow March 9th. Savannah started out uploading songs she sang to YouTube just a few years ago and now she’s being featured on Radio Disney, performing at concerts and doing interviews like this one!

I asked Savannah about her journey, advice she would give to people wanting a successful singing career and more. Here are a few excerpts from the interview that I thought you all would benefit from.

Disnology: Your story is amazing. So, you just started posting videos of you singing and playing guitar on YouTube. What made you decide to start doing that?

Savannah: It was actually my parents’ idea. Nothing was really happening for me at the time. I was kind of desperate and decided to post a video to YouTube and then the fans started asking me to post more, so I did. Now, just as of yesterday, I hit over 51 million views. It has been pretty awesome and I am just so thankful for all of my fans on YouTube.

Disnology: Have you ever had professional training – singing, guitar or did it just come naturally?

Savannah: It came naturally. I just recently took a singing lesson just to see what it would be like. I wanted to try it out. It was fun and different. I think what I got most out of it was how to breathe when I am on stage so I don’t run out of breath. But, I’ve never taken a singing lesson other than that. I’ve always just listened to singers on CDs and study how they move their voice around, so I think that’s kind of how I learned to sing. It did just kind of come naturally for me.

I taught myself how to play guitar. My parents got me an electric guitar for me when I was 13, for my 13th Christmas and ever since I’ve been in love with playing the guitar. I went on the internet and learned how to place my fingers and just kind of taught myself that way.

Disnology: What advice would you give kids who want a successful singing career like yours?

Savannah: I would have to say, this is a really tough business. You need to have a very thick skin and a very supportive family and friends. If you have that support, I think you can do anything. And just to believe in yourself and never give up. I always try to tell kids that they should never give up and it’s so true because if I were to have given up a couple of years ago, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Just always believe in yourself and dream big.

Bridgit Mendler Shares How She Landed the Role on JONAS

I had the opportunity to interview Bridgit Mendler from the new Disney Channel series Good Luck Charlie over at Disnology. I asked her about how she got the role on JONAS, how she landed the lead role in a Disney Channel series and also if she had any advice for people wanting to pursue an acting or singing career. She had some good things to share!

Disnology: How did you end up getting a lead role in a Disney Channel series?

Bridgit: I first started off by acting on JONAS. I sent in a tape for that and I was very excited to get picked. I did a couple of episodes of Wizards of Waverly Place. Then they brought me in to audition for Good Luck Charlie. I did a chemistry read with Jason [Dolley] for a little while and then I ended up getting the part. I was so incredibly excited. I was jumping up and down and screaming. I was just so happy to get the part.

Disnology: So, you said you sent in a tape to get that role. That’s great that sending in a tape can actually work!

Bridgit: Yeah, I was flying to New York, so I didn’t have time to go to L.A. and audition because I was living out of town at the time. So, I had to send in a tape. I didn’t think that I would actually get the part. I am really hard on myself, so maybe that was why. But I didn’t feel like it was a good audition at all. It took me forever to tape it and send it off and I was thinking ‘Oh, I am never going to get it’ and then I got a call and found out I got it. So, I was really excited about that.

Disnology: How did you get started in acting?

Bridgit: I got started when I moved to California. My mom put me into this acting camp over the summer, just to have something for me to do and I wound up really liking it. I did a couple of plays after that. Then I decided this was actually something I wanted to try and pursue. I tried to get an agent, got an agent in L.A. and then things just started happening and it’s been really a fun experience.

Disnology: What advice can you give to kids who want to act or sing?

Bridgit: It’s definitely a difficult thing to pursue, especially if you’re not living in L.A.. So the most important thing is to really be committed and you have to let your friends and your family know that you really want to do it and that you’re really serious about it. Once you have the support of the people around you, make sure to be with good people and just give it your all.

There were four things that stuck out to me during our interview when it comes to pursuing your acting career.

One: She said she sent in a tape, so that does work! Send in those tapes!

Two: She got an agent. Getting an agent is important.

Three: She had the support of her family who moved to Los Angeles with her.

Four: She took acting classes.

How to Establish a Good Acting Career

You don’t just want just an acting career, you want a good, great and fabulous acting career! It is more than just knowing how to act and portray a character.

Here are a few notes for you on establishing a good acting career:

- If you are new to show business and do not know where to go to for professional help, try to look around for reputable casting firms who could provide you with expert advice on how to evaluate your acting skill and what good roles may be suited for you.

- Make the most out of audition calls, since this is where you may be able to test yourself for roles that are available in the market.

- Sometimes it helps to work freelance, however, having an agent gives you more opportunities in landing opportunities for audition and casting calls. Take note that agents are the first ones to know of any available roles that are being cast for movies or shows.

- Choosing a good casting or agent is important, especially for amateur actors who still do not have much idea about how to scout for good acting roles. An agent can help you find the most suitable roles for you.
- There is always the risk of devoting too much time to balance between work and the demands of an acting career, especially when juggling a professional career and an acting venture.

- Always be sure to keep your word and always maintain a decent and professional demeanor. It does not matter whther you are an artist or not, you are still expected to maintain a professional air.

- Always make sure to prepare materials that you may need to promote yourself like audition tapes, resumes, headshots, portfolios, etc. Keep it handy all the time, you’ll never know when a good opportunity comes up.

- Always keep yourself updated and headstrong by joining acting workshops and advanced acting programs or projects that will help you continue to polish your acting skills, preparing you for better chances of landing good roles in the future.

- Make it a point to always put your best foot forward and always make sure that you are always ready to take on a variety of roles and characters, which is a good sign of your acting versatility and dynamic personality.

- Not everybody can make it successfully in an acting career, regardless of how hard one should try. Be ready to take on criticism and even skepticism, but taking it more of a constructive feedback rather than a disappointing twist.

- Always focus on things that you think that will always let you propel your acting career.

Auditions for CBS Pilot “Team Spitz” Starring Rob Riggle

Explore Talent has audition information for roles that need to be filled in the CBS pilot “Team Spitz” starring Rob Riggle from The Hangover. Auditions can be submitted until April 15, 2010.

Plot:
The show centers on a caring, but stubborn high school football coach named Jeff Spitz (Rob Riggle.) Jeff Spitz is a divorcee with three daughters to take care of. Jeff recently got canned from his last coaching job due to getting in a physical confrontation with a parent. Jeff is now forced to take a job at an upper-class private school, Westminster Prep. At this school Jeff realizes that his usual ways of operating will not work on these upper-class students due to the overly protective parents.

Looking for fresh new faces. Accepting union and non-union talent.

Pay: $665.00 per day

Here are the roles they are auditioning for:

Role 1 – Principal Charles

Principal Charles Kersey – A man that is able to hold a good front of confidence, but is truly a nervous wreck. Is a chicken when it comes to dealing with his students parents.

Role 2 – Alicia

Very pretty school counselor that makes sure all the students are content and don’t feel uneasy about anything.

A non-sporty kid that partakes in his schools marching band. He ends up getting talked into a football training practice so that the real football players will want to come back to the team.

Spitz’s 7 year old daughter that still lives with his ex-wife Fran. Gets the occasional custody visits with her dad, but doesn’t like his place as much because it smells bad.

Is part of the football team. Is a naive and trusting person on what he hears.

Role 6 – Jake and Ty

These two boys are your average American high school jocks that think they have it all, until the new football coach treats them just like everyone else on the team. They are so use to the glory due to being the quarterback and wide receiver on the team, that they decided to quit due to the coach’s methods. They soon realize that his new methods are for the better of the team and they want their positions back.

Football Players that follow Jake and Ty’s lead and walk out on the coach, but then they reconsider and decide they want back on the team.

A strong headed woman in her mid 30s. She’s Spitz’s ex-wife and mother to their three children.

Very involved in his work as a music teacher and marching band leader. Allows Spitz to use his marching band in a scheme to get back the football players that walked out.

She is the 10 year old middle child to Spitz and Fran. Doesn’t like the idea of her dad moving to another town.

Paramount Studios, Arad Productions, and Marvel Studios have teamed up to begin production on the feature film “The First Avenger: Captain America.”

Remember me telling you about the Disney Feature Film Prom? I have some audition info for you and they are looking for fill a bunch of roles! My recommendation is to go to Sign up with Explore Talent. I believe on Sundays they still have the deal where you can submit yourself to as many auditions as you want for FREE!
