BSM- When did you decide to pursue acting and what drew you to the arts?

TG- Well, when I was living in Indonesia, I was really never exposed to the art world. It was here in Los Angeles when I was working at Pizza Hut (my first job) where I first learned about acting. A friend of mine told me that I should audition for this Disneyland commercial, and I didn’t understand what an audition was exactly, let alone what was involved in a commercial. But I went anyway because she told me all I needed to do was pretend to be on a roller coaster and scream. “Oh, I can do that” I said to myself, “as long as I don’t have to say much,” since my English wasn’t very good at all. Long story short, I booked the commercial as one of the 15 people in the roller coaster. However after many, many times riding the same roller coaster, the lead actors all got sick, and many others were just nauseated. Except for me. I was cheery and laughing a lot because I had never ridden a real roller coaster before, and it was my first time at Disneyland. So the director decided to make me the only principal actor in the commercial. And he hired me for 2 more commercials after that. When I got my paychecks, I told my mom that I couldn’t believe there was a job where I can make a living and have fun at the same time!! So I decided to pursue acting. Haha, I guess it’s a long story huh?

Kelly Blatz, who stars in Disney XD’s Aaron Stone, is being called the next Zac Efron. BBC Newsbeat sat down with the star for an interview and they talked about his show, the first Disney XD Original Movie Skyrunners and auditions.

You used to work opposite the Disney studios in Los Angeles didn’t you before getting your big break with them?

I worked at a coffee shop directly across the street from Disney Channel building. So I served a lot of the people that I actually now work for. They got a real kick out of that. And I grew up in Burbank and that’s where Disney was, so it kind of worked out that way.

Did you go for auditions or did someone spot you while you were serving at the coffee shop?

No, I actually did audition for that. That would have been convenient, if they had just picked me out of the coffee shop. No, I auditioned like any other show. Luckily I was the right guy for some reason.

If people haven’t seen Aaron Stone, what’s it about?

Aaron Stone is about the kid named Charlie, who is a normal kid in high school. He’s the best player at this online video game called Hero Rising and one day this billionaire recluse approaches him and says, ‘Everything in Hero Rising is real and you have to become the real life avatar Aaron Stone and save the world and it’s up to you’.

So he’s thrown into this whirlwind of trying to balance his secret identity of being the superhero Aaron Stone and balancing dating and homework and sports and everything like that. That’s pretty much what the show is based around.
